1) Personalize it and let your brand direct you.
Last I checked, the world’s biggest tragedy was the term “one-size-fits-all.” A learning portal should allow today’s learner to get the content that is most relevant to them, therefore it is important that your portal is as flexible as possible.
Also make sure that your learning portal reflects your brand. The portal onto which your learning management system is being delivered, should personify your brand value and culture to help the learner’s experience. The portal’s design interface, visual consistency, language and tonality should all carryout your brand. (This is where you consult your content writers and marketing team.)
2) Enable community interaction and community building.
A learning journey should be a wholesome experience filled with interactive discussions with colleagues (other learners) and teachers. It doesn’t mean you eliminate the idea of self-directed learning, instead create a blend of autonomy from self-directed learning with the opportunity to engage in and share new knowledge. Provide them with the videos and relevant links to assist with their learning but also think collaborative and social. Discussion forums, blogs, and sharing buttons are great communication tools that can create an environment that encourages interaction around content. Remember, you want this space to be a place for the learners to keep coming back for more.
Make it a place for feedback tailored to their preferences. Learners should be able to provide feedback on their learning experience. Survey them to see what’s working and what can be improved. Effective communication goes a long way!
3) Accessible and responsive
We live in a world where information needs to be in the palm of your hand. Multi-device delivery is very important for modern day learner as they prefer to learn on the go. Therefore, your portal must be accessible and easy to navigate through on smart devices. Identify the gaps between work and home and make sure that information that is imperative to the learner is accessible on all the smart-devices.
4) Flexible and Tailored
A large organization which is diverse with multiple departments needs a portal that offers a customized learning experience. As the information in different departments vary so do their needs and wants in delivering this information. Search for a solution that offers flexibility on structure and design control.
As I mentioned earlier, one-size does NOT fit all. Now more than ever, it has become very important to tailor the learners’ experience. Understand their position and challenges; this helps increase empathy and relevance in your research. Approach this situation by acknowledging that learners will have different learning styles and personas, and attitude towards learning. Your portal should allow an interface that encompasses the different tools you need in order to execute the information which is custom designed in your Learning Management System.
This is my personal favourite. Like every service and product, you need to remember that even this learning portal needs attention from the users.
